About SMA

What does SMA stand for?
SMA stands for the Society of African Missions (Société des Missions Africaines in French). It is an international Catholic missionary society founded in 1856 by Bishop Melchior de Marion Brésillac in Lyon, France, dedicated to evangelization and human development in Africa.
When did SMA arrive in Ghana?
The first SMA missionaries arrived on the Gold Coast (now Ghana) in 1880. They established the Catholic Church in many parts of the country, founding parishes, schools, and hospitals. The SMA Ghana Province was formally erected in 1950.
What does SMA Ghana Province do?
SMA Ghana Province is involved in: parish ministry and evangelization across 17+ districts, education (including Bresillac Catholic School), healthcare, the St. Martin Deaf Ministry (SMDM), disability empowerment (Hope for Life Foundation), priestly formation of 42+ seminarians, hospitality through the SMA Retreat Centre and Guest House, and social development projects. Where is the SMA Provincial House?

Who leads the SMA Ghana Province?
The 2025 Provincial Leadership consists of: Very Rev. Fr. George Arthur, SMA (Provincial Superior), Rev. Fr. Abraham Ndomwin Guolitiri, SMA (Provincial Secretary), Rev. Fr. How many priests has SMA Ghana ordained?
Since the erection of the Ghana Province in 1950, SMA has ordained over 456 priests who serve in Ghana, across Africa, and around the world.

Vocations & Formation

How do I join SMA and become a missionary priest?
If you feel called to the SMA missionary life, start by visiting our Vocations page and filling out the interest form. Requirements include: being a baptized and confirmed Catholic male, at least a high school graduate (WASSCE/BECE), in good health, and between 18–35 years of age. You can also contact the Vocation Director via the Provincial Office at +233 24 596 1130.
How long does SMA formation take?
SMA formation typically takes 7–8 years and includes five main stages: Propaedeutic Year (spiritual foundation), Philosophy Studies (3 years), Spiritual Year / Novitiate (1 year), Pastoral Stage (1–2 years of missionary experience), and Theology Studies (4 years) leading to Ordination. All formation takes place at the SMA Formation House, Oshuiman – Amamoley Estate.
Can women join SMA?
The SMA is a society of male clergy and lay associates. However, the Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) Sisters, founded in 1876, are the female counterpart of the SMA family. Women interested in religious missionary life can contact the OLA Sisters. Additionally, both men and women can serve as SMA Lay Associates and contribute to the mission through volunteer work and other forms of service.
How many seminarians are currently in formation?
SMA Ghana Province currently has 42+ seminarians at various stages of formation, from propaedeutic year through theology. They are being trained in philosophy, theology, pastoral skills, and missionary spirituality to become the next generation of SMA missionaries.

Can I sponsor a seminarian? How much does it cost?
Yes! Sponsoring a seminarian costs approximately GHS 8,000 (~$650 USD) per year and covers education, meals, accommodation, and pastoral training. You can sponsor for one year or for the full duration of formation (7–8 years). Contact the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Fr. Abraham Ndomwin Guolitiri at +233 59 545 3524 or fill out our contact form for personalised sponsorship matching.
Can I donate from outside Ghana?
Yes! International supporters can use the GCB Bank details for wire transfer. Contact us at bursarprovsmagh@gmail.com for SWIFT/routing details. We also welcome donations through institutional partners and mission agencies.
Are donations tax-deductible?
SMA Ghana Province is a registered religious organisation. Tax deductibility depends on your country's tax laws. We can provide donation receipts and documentation upon request. Please contact the Provincial Office for specific tax-related enquiries.
Can I donate in kind instead of money?
Yes — we welcome donations of materials, equipment, and supplies for our schools, formation house, Retreat Centre, and community projects. This includes textbooks, furniture, medical supplies, and other essential items. Please contact us to arrange delivery or pick-up.
Can I set up monthly recurring donations?
Absolutely! Recurring giving helps us plan and sustain our programmes more effectively. You can set up a standing order with your bank using the GCB Bank account details, or send via MTN MoMo monthly. Any regular amount — GHS 50, GHS 100, GHS 500 — makes a significant difference over time.

How do I book a room at the SMA Retreat Centre?
You can browse available rooms and book directly through our Retreat Centre page. Select your preferred facility (SMA Retreat Centre, Winneba Hostel, or Cape Coast Rooms), choose your dates, pick a room, and complete your booking. You can also call +233 24 596 1130 for phone bookings.
What facilities are available for booking?
We offer three accommodation facilities:
1. SMA Retreat Centre (Oshuiman, Accra) — Spiritual retreat and conference facility with various room types, Wi-Fi, AC, and meeting halls.
2. SMA Winneba Hostel — Comfortable hostel accommodation in Winneba.
3. SMA Cape Coast Rooms — Quality rooms for rent in Cape Coast.

Can I book the Retreat Centre for a conference or group event?
Yes! The SMA Retreat Centre is ideal for spiritual retreats, conferences, workshops, seminars, and group events. We have meeting halls with projector facilities, catering services, and flexible room arrangements. Contact us at +233 24 596 1130 or submit a booking enquiry for group rates and availability.
What are the check-in/check-out times? Can I cancel a booking?
Standard check-in is 2:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM. Early check-in or late check-out can be arranged based on availability. For cancellations, please contact us at least 48 hours before your check-in date. Cancellation policies vary by room type — details are provided during booking.

Projects & Ministries

What is the Bresillac Catholic School?
The Fr. Bresillac Catholic School is a parish-based primary school at Our Lady Queen of Africa Parish, Kwabenya, Accra. It was officially commissioned on 7 September 2024 by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, Archbishop of Accra, with Fr. Paul Saa-Dade Ennin, SMA as the founding pastor. The school provides quality Catholic education focused on faith formation, academic excellence, and character development.
What is the Hope for Life Foundation?
Hope for Life is an SMA-initiated community-based rehabilitation programme empowering 800+ people with disabilities in the Ga South Municipality, Accra. The project offers skills training (soap-making, beadwork, sewing), micro-credit, physiotherapy, assistive devices, and community integration — helping participants live with dignity and independence.
What is the St. Martin Deaf Ministry?
The St. Martin Deaf Ministry (SMDM) is Ghana's first Catholic pastoral ministry for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Founded on 22 November 2020 by Fr. Kouamé René Dan Yao, SMA, it serves deaf communities in Accra and Kumasi through sign-language liturgy, catechesis, youth programmes, and advocacy — guided by the motto "Every person has the right to worship God." Where is the SMA Formation House?
The SMA Formation House is located at Oshuiman – Amamoley Estate, Accra — on the same compound as the Provincial Headquarters. It provides accommodation, academic facilities, chapel, library, and recreation for seminarians at all stages of formation. The community is led by a Formation Director and assisted by other SMA formators.

How do I request a Mass intention?
You can request a Mass intention by contacting us via our contact form (select "Mass Intention" as the subject), calling the Provincial Secretary at +233 59 545 3524, or visiting any of our parishes directly. A suggested stipend may apply.
