What is a Vocation?

What is an SMA Vocation?

A vocation to the Society of African Missions is a call from God to dedicate your life to missionary service — specifically to the peoples of Africa and those of African heritage. It is a call to leave everything and follow Christ to the ends of the earth.

SMA members — priests and brothers — live in community, share a common prayer life, and are sent on mission wherever the Church needs them. They serve in parishes, schools, hospitals, and development projects across Africa and beyond.

The Journey

Formation Pathway

The journey to becoming an SMA missionary involves several stages of academic, spiritual, and pastoral formation.

Philosophy
3 Years
Study of philosophy and human sciences as foundation for theology and ministry.

Spiritual Year
1 Year
Intensive year of prayer, discernment, and deepening one's relationship with God.

Pastoral Year
1 Year
Hands-on missionary experience in a parish or mission community in Africa.
4
Theology
4 Years
Deep study of Sacred Scripture, dogmatic theology, moral theology, and pastoral ministry.
5
Ordination
Lifelong
Ordained to the priesthood and sent on mission — serving God's people wherever needed.
Requirements

Who Can Apply?

The SMA welcomes young men who feel called to missionary life and meet the following criteria.

Practicing Catholic

Must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic with an active faith life, regular participation in the Eucharist, and a genuine desire to serve God.

Education

Minimum of WASSCE or equivalent qualification. Good academic standing and willingness to pursue further studies in philosophy and theology.

Age & Character

Typically between ages 18–30. Good moral character, emotional maturity, ability to live in community, and openness to being sent anywhere.

Missionary Heart

A genuine desire to serve the peoples of Africa and openness to intercultural mission. Willingness to go wherever the SMA sends you.

Good Health

Physical and mental fitness for the demands of missionary life. A medical examination is part of the admission process.

Parish Recommendation

A letter of recommendation from your parish priest confirming your good standing and suitability for priestly/religious formation.
